Imitation is said to be the sincerest form of flattery, but did you know it is also the most economical?
Take this dip, for example. I whipped it up after falling in love with something similar but financially ruinous to buy. All it took was a quick squizz at the ingredients on the bottom of the tub it came in, a bit of experimenting with quantities and before you knew it I had something just as good. Better, even. If only I could manage the same trick with shoes...
Blue cheese and walnut dip
This is barely a recipe - there are three ingredients and about 30 seconds worth of method - but I urge you to down tools and make it.
150g cream cheese, at room temperature
50g blue cheese (a fairly tangy, crumbly one is best)
50g walnut halves, broken up with your fingers
Put everything in a small bowl and mash together with a fork until it is a homogenous mass. Good with celery sticks or robust crackers. Alternatively, spread it on some toasted wholegrain bread, top with slices of pear and stick it until the grill until bubbly. Keep anything you don't use at once in the fridge, covered, for up to a week.
What's your favourite copycat trick at the moment?
Excellent! Book marking this for the Girl's Christmas party at mine ;0)
ReplyDeleteWell, I won't leave my normal "yum, adding it to the list" comment on this one, as I am momentarily banned from eating mouldy cheese (shhhhh! ;)
ReplyDeleteBut our current super cheap imitation eat is homemade popcorn slathered in salt and melted butter. Does that count? x Rhi
Now that is my kind of dip, I love it!
ReplyDeleteyuuuuum! dip! perfect for snacks-for-dinner in this impending good weather. I wonder if I could do the same with the financially ruinous smoked mussel pate I have found myself addicted to. Surely worth a try...
ReplyDeleteNow did you know that walnuts lower your cholestorol? However, the same can't be said for blue cheese, but maybe they will cancel each other out! Perfect recipe to bookmark for Christmas. We always have loads of cheese because my husband works for a cheese company! Just love the look of this.
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm brilliant copycat trick. How much was the original? You should work out how much yours cost to make and how much you could sell the quantity for. Then see how much you made per hour. Or maybe that's just the sad sort of thing I would do.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any good copycat ideas - must try harder.
I once made my own moccasins. The didn't look goodand lasted for about a week!
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious. Blue cheese and walnuts are a match made in heaven.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the ingredients list is a very good trick. What a stunner combination of ingredients this is!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to make this.....BUT buying the cheese here in Malaysia would make it just as expensive, if not more, than buying a pot. I shall just have to look and drool and imagine.....
