While unloading the dishwasher yesterday morning (surely the best sound in the world is the steady whirr of the dishwasher working away when you go to bed at night) I suddenly realised my most-used kitchen tools are all under-sized.
The little egg flipper thing (at least, that's what we call it) is brilliant for lifting biscuits off trays, flipping fritters, fried eggs or fishcakes, the miniature whisk is useful for one-egg wonders or making small batches of mayo, the hot pink spatula is useful for everything, particularly porridge making and the tongs are so well-used that we've gone through two sets in the last year (though they are not so good if you're using them near hot oil, as my burned hands can attest).
I do have some normal-sized tools, of course, but these little guys are my closest companions in most tasks.
Do you go in for mini-me kitchenalia? Does size matter at your place?
size always matters!... I broke my tongs a while back and I feel bereft without them... but every time i'm in a shop where i could buy a pair, I forget! (wow that is fascinating Dom....)
ReplyDeleteI agree about the whirring of dishwashers...every time I turn mine on it short circuits the house so I've not been using it. I really miss it! I'd have so much more time for baking If I wasn't always washing dishes.
ReplyDeleteMy tools are pretty big too...tongs are one of my most useful tools and yes they have to be big. My mums motto was 'what will hold a lot will hold a little' and I suppose that can be applied to kitchen implements as well as pots and pans.
I love tiny kitchen tools! I have one of those tiny fish-slice type things too and it's amazing, I use it all the time ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you and Debby on the whirring of the dishwasher at night. I find it restful to know that I won't be waking up to a sink of dirty dishes and I know that if I don't here it 'ping' when it's finished I've had a nice deep sleep!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure where I stand on the tiny utensils though. I do have some although they are usually used by the kids.
I prefer little utensils. I don't know why. Maybe it's because it feels like only a partial commitment. My teeny tiny tongs comes in two kinds. Plastic headed ones and metal. The metal pair came attached to a business card for a catering company. A great giveaway if you ask me. Although I can't remember the name of the caterers now. It's been too many years. Perhaps they should have had their name engraved into the tongs...
ReplyDeleteI would love a tiny whisk. Would be awesome for gravy and a single beaten egg for burgers etc.
I laughed out loud at this post. Because I not only have the exact same whisk, spatula and tongs (in lime green) but they are my most used tools in the kitchen. I need to go buy one more of those flippers, cause its only 2 bucks and mine is looking a bit worn now :)
