Birthday cake

The Small Girl turned two on Saturday. It was a bright, sunny, exhilarating and exhausting day, much like the one on which she was born. Last year we had champagne and cupcakes, this year it was coffee and muffins. Funnily enough, none of the party guests were that keen on a glass of champagne at 10.30am, so we saved it until they'd gone home. They were all keen on a slice of birthday cake though - a light and luscious Orange Chiffon Cake with a drizzle of orange icing and some clever candles.

I found the recipe here - and despite dirtying nearly every kitchen implement I had in the process and the fact that my laptop kept turning itself off everytime I needed to check something, it worked a treat. I'll definitely make it again soon, especially because by next year I'll probably have less say in what the cake is going to be.

What's your favourite birthday cake? Are you a builder of castles and pirate ships, or do you favour flavour over form? Pin It

  4. This cake sounds hardcore - but worth it. I'm not sure if I have a specific favourite birthday cake - but whatever it ends up being, I like it more and more the older I get (when I was a kid I was just about the icing on top ;)

  6. Flavour over form for sure! My Gran actually made me her famous fruit cake for my 9th birthday - I don't think anyone except the adults ate it. Last year I made my flatmate and I a hummingbird cake for our birthdays and it was a winner. Orange chiffon sounds so inviting!

  7. Happy Birthday! I suppose nothing can beat a flourless chocolate cake with ganache in my book... simple but rich.

  9. Wow looks like a sponge volcano! ... why are you hanging out with people who won't drink champagne at 10:30? Perfect time for bubbly if you ask me! I love a fruity chocolatey birthday cake. My mum used to make me a Dougal cake (from the magic roundabout) which was essentially a Swiss roll with ladies fingers for the hair!

  10. i agree with Dom...10:30 is the perfect time for champers! my mom used to make chocolate cake with white icing covered with smarties all in the shape of what ever number we were turning...eventually it turned into a mint chocolate chip ice cream cake from baskin and robbins....this cake looks so perfect!! :)

  11. 10.30 am is definitely time for champagne. What's going on here?!
My favourite birthday cake is my mom's layered chocolate sponge with butter cream and blueberries. Yum.

  13. Aw, hope she had a lovely birthday. Your orange chiffon cake sounds wonderful. Perfect for this time of year. For my kids, it's all about the icing and decoration but for other members of my family I will make more flavoursome, less garish cakes.
My Mum and Dad used to get me an ice cream cake for my birthdays. It was decorated with sherbet type colourful bits which really make you suck your teeth in. I looked forward to it all year!

  14. Yes, that cake does look yummy.
As for cake, my mother used to make (still does on request) a triple decker chocolate gateau with strawberries and cream between the layers, and melted chocolate on top. The thing was to eat the leftovers for breakfast the day after....so delicious. I need to get the receipe.

  15. Big Happy Birthday to the small girl!
You know that I LOVE birthdays and everything involved, but I find the cake the scariest thing! I get all nervous and leave it all to the last minute.
My Mum used to do icecream cakes for our birthdays as otherwise the kids would just eat the icing off and leave the cake, making her efforts in the kitchen just pointless!

  16. happy birthday to her small girl - I love building castles and pirate ships but try to balance it with flavour - though when it is for kids parties I get less enthused about the flavour - they are far more interested in form than flavour in my experience - your orange cake looks very impressive - am sure the small girl will be more bossy by the next birthday if she develops like sylvia is

  17. What a lovely cake! I've learnt over the years that with kids it's really more about the decorations than the cake so I usually stick to a good old chocolate cake or Tessa Kiros' Vanilla Cake.

Hello - thanks for stopping by. If this was real life I'd make you a cup of tea and open the biscuit tin, but in lieu of those things, let's have a chat anyway...
