One a penny, two a penny...

I'd like to tell you that I've invented the best hot cross bun recipe ever, but that would be a terrible lie.

These ones pictured are Nigella's recipe, which I first made the year we drove around Europe in a small red car with a cheese knife and a corkscrew in the glovebox (we had a sack of flour and other sundry foodstuffs on the back seat). I've never made them with such success since, but perhaps my changed lifestyle has something to do with that.
Unsurprisingly, I think St Delia has the best recipe, or at least the one I've found to be the best. The only advice I can give you is to go easy on the cinnamon as it retards yeast development and make them somewhere warm.
We were only allowed hot cross buns on Good Friday when I was growing up and I mostly stick to the same rule. So tomorrow I'll be attempting to make them in a breadmaker at my parents' house... since they'll be the first of the year, they better be good!

Do you have any hot cross bun secrets? Let me know! In the meantime, have a wonderful Easter and a happy weekend x Pin It

  1. I have never ever made a hot cross bun, and I have no idea why because I love them. Yours is the second blog post today I've read with yummy-looking hot cross buns and it's made me very hungry so I am definitely making some asap, hopefully on Friday so I can stick with tradition!

  2. oh I hate to laugh at your mis-fortune but that picture of those... um... whatever they are... mutant buns? just had me falling off my chair!... I love a kitchen disaster!!... I just made my first batch ever and they came out perfect, got the recipe from the BBC site and adapted slightly... never thought to look in Delia!... however, i've just made another batch to take to the BBC Radio show tomorrow morning and they're proving at the moment and you know when you have that terrible sinking feeling that they're not going to be as good as the first time... well... i'll let you know x

  3. I made hot cross buns using a Delia recipe this morning and they were fantastic. Definitely among the best I'd ever had so would definitely recommend her recipe.

Hello - thanks for stopping by. If this was real life I'd make you a cup of tea and open the biscuit tin, but in lieu of those things, let's have a chat anyway...
