The pitter patter of tiny feet...

We've had lots of visitors and houseguests in the last month and thought we'd waved goodbye to the last set on Monday. But last night, as I sat up late working, I realised I wasn't alone. We have an intruder. Actually, we probably have more than one. And I'm sorry, but he/she/they have to go.

Call me selfish and heartless, but I'm not sharing my kitchen with these furry pests (who look nothing like the cute fairytale mouse in this photo). But how am I going to get rid of them in a reasonably humane and child-friendly fashion? More importantly, am I going to be able to get off this stool without one running across my foot? Pin It

  2. We have lots of these in o shed at the moment too! Mr FGB had a blitz last week and got 5 but hasn't caught any since... hopefully that's the end. I have heard of a few people this year, all over the country who have had mice when they havn't before...
All the best with finding that humane way... We tried a trap once with peanut butter - apparently it works better than cheese and we caught a live one. I think we googled it. Kids loved it!

  3. I thought I had it bad with an invasion of ants in the bathroom! I really prefer to bathe alone, thank you veddy much! And I'm sure you don't want anyone in your kitchen who doesn't come up at least to your knees!

  5. I have a couple of little contraptions courtesy of my mother-in-law that I could lend you to stop the pitter patter of little feet!

  6. Anna, yes, I did want to faint!

Emma, thanks for the peanut butter tip. Melted chocolate is a winner too, apparently. But what do you do when you catch one?!

Jean, our house had fleas when we moved into it and they were TERRIBLE! Ants are pretty annoying though, I agree.

Paula, our problem is that the Small Girl leaves a trail of crumbs everywhere, like a little Gretel.

Book Gatherer, I hate to think what your MiL's contraptions are!

  7. We had that problem late last year, bought a humane mousetrap from Mitre10 and caught this fulla: http://twitpic.com/35dg2l Things then turned interesting when I transferred said furry bundle into a container for Mr 4 to look at. We then got in the car and drove to the train station with the intention of releasing him/her in the bushes there, but the lid fell off and I ended up with a mouse in my lap, then a disappeared mouse. We all spent the rest of the day thinking about how I had possibly released the mouse into the car... so I guess the moral of the story is don't repeat my folly!

  9. I don't think humane traps work very well, they breed surprisingly fast and unless you drop them miles away they seem to make there way back to those lovely things tempting them in your kitchen. My cat has bought me several of the little blighters, the one I most remember is when my first born was a week old and it ran across her sheepskin rug - eek! That made my mind up about whether I needed to worry about a human trap or not.

  10. Ahhh, this is so tough. We has some little friends a few months ago and we started with humane traps. We caught about two. But then, we noticed that they got smart and got the peanut butter and did not get trapped! So, I hate to say it we got the not so humane traps. I hated it, but like you, I just did not want them in our kitchen!!

Hello - thanks for stopping by. If this was real life I'd make you a cup of tea and open the biscuit tin, but in lieu of those things, let's have a chat anyway...
