Beware of gardeners with gifts...

Our zucchini plant flowered beautifully, but produced one tiny fruit about the length of my little finger. Anna and Jeremy's zucchini plants have been feasting on organic compost and other mystery nutrients and their produce go from little to large overnight. Oh how we all laughed when I asked if they waited until one zucchini was big enough to feed their whole family before they picked it. Then they sent me home with one.

Guess which one of these specimens came from the supermarket?
Dear readers, what do I do with it? This beast won't fit in the fridge and it's making all the other vegetables feel inadequate (not to mention taking up valuable bench space). Help! Pin It

  1. My suggestion is to gut out the seeds, rub it all over with an herbed olive oil rub, make a sausage and veg saute and stuff it, slather the top with cheesy goodness and roast it for supper!

  5. So, not to bore you with facts but the trick with courgettes is to always plant at least 4 plants. Never one. They are either male or female and won't propagate with just the one plant which is why you end up with a small fruit. Something I learnt myself last year.
I would grate it and make cupcakes!

  6. You could do some sort of veggie curry with sweet potatoes or Japanese it up, put it in some batter and serve it with sushi...Also, Nigella has a recipe in her book 'Domestic Goddess' for a cake with courgettes on it.
All the best, Natasha from the Rambles and Shambles blog

  9. Uh-oh the mighty marrow. Double yuck. I was plagued with well-meaning friends giving them to me last summer too!
I found this recipe if it's any use but never tried it - 'Marrow Rum' in Homebrew category by Hunter Gather Cook http://huntergathercook.typepad.com
    Good luck :)

Hello - thanks for stopping by. If this was real life I'd make you a cup of tea and open the biscuit tin, but in lieu of those things, let's have a chat anyway...
